Disease Information
We are always delighted when patients bring us questions raised from their own reading - either in the library or on the internet. It is possible to find a lot of useful information in cyberspace and it is possible to be misled as well. We have collected together some useful links to sites that we find offer generally valid information (we haven't checked it all!) and we have begun to write a series of FAQ sheets for conditions where a simple explanation seems to be hard to find.
Please enjoy these resources but remember that the information here (or anywhere on the web) is not a substitute for a proper medical consultation with your doctor. Please see our disclaimer for more information.

Recommended Web Sites
- About Kids Health
A very useful resource with a lot of quality articles and information about child health. Written by healthcare professionals, the advice here is excellent. Worth a look before you get sick!
- Emedicine
This is where a lot of doctors go to learn more about diseases. The articles are written in a clear and succinct manner but do rely very heavily on medical terminology. The information is very reliable and usually totally up to date having been written by specialists in the relevant fields. You can find out about almost anything on this site.
- Patient
This is a UK based commercial website which provides a very high standard of information on most common conditions. The information is written for patients and tends to be easier to read and understand than emedicine but does not have quite the same authority. The language is rather complex and some articles are a little more thorough than most patients will require.
- Pubmed
The only place to do real research. This amazing resource allows you to search the titles and abstracts of almost all published medical journal articles since 1964 to the present day. If you would like to get straight to the source of medical knowledge this is where to find it. USE WITH CAUTION! - the quality of the articles is not assessed and it can be very difficult to sort the good from the bad. All are published medical research but the raw nature of the data can be very confusing to those without extensive training. We are happy to assist you if you have specific questions and again would like to remind you of the importance of discussing anything you might find out with us in a consultation.
