Anticoagulant Dosing and Management

Having to take Warfarin to reduce the risk of blood clots forming is stressful and can be dangerous if not properly managed.

We offer our patients a superior service, with blood testing, dosage and all management issues around the taking of warfarin centrally coordinated from our surgery.

We include all aspects of warfarin management in our single monthly fee of $10, allowing our patients the security of knowing that no matter how many times they need doses checking, there will not be any unpleasant extra bills.

What is warfarin?

Warfarin is a member of the coumarin anticoagulants and is very similar in structure to vitamin K. Vitamin K is essential for the proper production of some of the proteins that form clots - warfarin gets in the way and so leads to much slower clot formation.

We carefully monitor the speed of clotting (INR) to keep it in a range where the risk of clots is lower and the risk of bleeding not too high.

Unfortunately, the dose needed varies from person to person and can be affected by many factors, including diet, medication, alcohol and some illnesses.

Most people will find a dose level that suits them after a while and can have monthly blood tests, but sometimes getting the dose right is harder and tests need to be done more often. We try to keep testing to a minimum, but please understand that more frequent testing may be required to keep you safe.
